AA-2005.0018 AUSCERT Advisory

Novell NetMail NMAP agent buffer overflow vulnerability
13 October 2005
- - ---------------------------------------------------------------------------

AusCERT Advisory Summary
------------------------

Product: Novell Netmail 3.52c and prior
Operating System: Windows
Linux variants
Novell Netware
Impact: Execute Arbitrary Code/Commands
Access: Remote/Unauthenticated
Member-only until: Thursday, November 10 2005

Ref: ESB-2004.0758

Original Bulletin:
http://support.novell.com/cgi-bin/search/searchtid.cgi?/2972340.htm

OVERVIEW:

The NetMail NMAP agent has a buffer overflow vulnerability when
handling long user names in the USER command.

This can be exploited by an attacker who is able to successfully
authenticate to the NetMail NMAP agent. This may be made easier in
the case where the default NMAP authentication credential has not
been changed, as described in ESB-2004.0758. [4]

IMPACT:

An attacker who can authenticate to the NMAP agent can remotely
execute arbitrary code.

MITIGATION:

NetMail update 3.52D has been released, fixing this vulnerability.
This is available from the Novell TIDs linked to below.

It is also recommended that system administrators ensure a
non-default NMAP authentication credential is set, using the
instructions in [5].
