HPSBUX02102 SSRT051078 rev.1 - HP-UX usermod(1M) Local
UnaUthorized Access.
NOTICE: The information in this Security Bulletin should be acted
upon as soon as possible.
Release Date: 2006-03-13
Last Updated: 2006-03-15
Potential Security Impact: Local unauthorized access to user and
system files and directories.
Source: Hewlett-Packard Company,
HP Software Security Response Team
VULNERABILITY SUMMARY
A vulnerability has been identified with certain versions of the
HP-UX usermod(1M) command. A certain combination of options can
result in recursively changing the ownership of all directories
and files under a user's new home directory. This may result in
unauthorized access to these directories and files.
References: none
SUPPORTED SOFTWARE VERSIONS*: ONLY impacted versions are listed.
HP-UX B.11.00, B.11.11, B.11.23
BACKGROUND
The behavior is present in HP-UX B.11.00, B.11.11, and B.11.23.
For B.11.11, the affected version of usermod(1M) is present only
in these patches: PHCO_29269, PHCO_30275, PHCO_32181.
Executing a vulnerable version of usermod(1M) in the following
manner
# usermod -d
-u -m
or
# usermod -d -u -m
causes the ownership of all files and directories to be
recursively changed to .
If the home directory is '/' the system will immediately become
inoperable. For home directories other than '/' there may or may
not be an issue. If directories or files under the home directory
were owned by an account other than , the affected files
or directories may be subject to unauthorized access.

RESOLUTION
HP has made the following patch available to resolve this issue.
The patch is available from http://itrc.hp.com
HP-UX B.11.11 - PHCO_33142 or subsequent
Until patches are available for the other affected versions,
usermod(1M) should not be used in the following manner:
# usermod -d -u -m
or
# usermod -d -u -m
For B.11.11, the affected version of usermod(1M) is present only
in these patches: PHCO_29269. PHCO_30275, PHCO_32181.
All new patches will only provide a version of usermod(1M) that
does not exhibit the behavior. These patches will not detect any
ownerships that may have been altered by the vulnerable version of
usermod(1M). Customers should verify that file/directory
ownerships have not been altered.
NOTE: The swverify option fix=true can restore altered ownerships
for software installed by swinstall.
This Security Bulletin will be revised as other patches become a
vailable.
MANUAL ACTIONS: Yes - NonUpdate
B.11.11 - install PHCO_33142 or subsequent.
B.11.00 and B.11.23 - Avoid using the usermod(1M) command as
described above.

VULNERABILITY SUMMARY
A security vulnerability has been identified in Apache HTTP

BACKGROUND
The Apache Software Foundation (http://httpd.apache.org/) and the
Apache HTTP Server Project have announced the release of version
1.3.34 of the Apache HTTP Server:
"Of particular note is that 1.3.34 addresses and fixes 2
potential security issues:
* If a request contains both Transfer-Encoding and
Content-Length headers, remove the Content-Length,
mitigating some HTTP Request Splitting/Spoofing attacks.
* Added TraceEnable [on|off|extended] per-server directive to
alter the behavior of the TRACE method."
Note: To determine if a system has an affected version, search the
output of "swlist -a revision -l fileset" for an affected fileset.

RESOLUTION
HP has made the following patches and software updates available

-> For B.11.04 HP has made the following patch available:
-> PHSS_34123 Virtualvault 4.7 OWS (Apache 2.x) update
-> PHSS_34163 Webproxy server 2.1 (Apache 2.x) update
Software updates for the Apache-based Web Server are available
from:
http://h20293.www2.hp.com/cgi-bin/swdepot_parser.cgi/cgi/
displayProductInfo.pl?productNumber=HPUXWSSUITE
HP-UX B.11.00, B.11.11 and HP-UX B.11.23 require the Apache-based
Web Server v.2.0.55.00 or subsequent.
Apache Update Procedure
Check for Apache Installation
----------------------------
To determine if the Apache web server from HP is installed on your
system, use Software Distributor's swlist command. All three
revisions of the product may co-exist on a single system.
For example, the results of the command
swlist -l product | grep -i apache
hpuxwsAPACHE B.2.0.54.00 HP-UX Apache-based Web Server
Stop Apache
-------------
Before updating, make sure to stop any previous Apache binary.
Otherwise, the previous binary will continue running, preventing
the new one from starting, although the installation would be
successful. After determining which Apache is installed, stop
Apache with the following commands:
for hpuxwsAPACHE: /opt/hpws/apache[32]/bin/apachectl stop
Download and Install Apache
-----------------------------
Download Apache from Software Depot:
http://h20293.www2.hp.com/cgi-bin/swdepot_parser.cgi/cgi/
displayProductInfo.pl?productNumber=HPUXWSSUITE
Verify successful download by comparing the cksum with the value
specified on the installation web page.
Use SD to swinstall the depot.
Installation of this new revision of HP Apache over an existing HP
Apache installation is supported, while installation over a non-HP
Apache is NOT supported.
Removing Apache Installation
----------------------------
If you prefer to remove Apache from your system instead of
installing a newer revision to resolve the security problem, use
both Software Distributor's "swremove" command and also "rm -rf"
the home location as specified in the rc.config.d file "HOME"
variables.
%ls /etc/rc.config.d | \
grep apache hpapache2conf hpws_apache[32]conf
MANUAL ACTIONS: Yes - Update plus other actions
