Applications

Applications are pieces of software that perform specific tasks. It is essential to understand that they do not exist in a vacuum and so their security must be considered as part of the environment they inhabit.

There are two considerations of application security:

  • internal security: if the application fails, does it do so in a safe manner?
  • the relationship with the computer it operates on: does it require excessive privileges?

Security professionals should ask whether the application is required on the system and whether it has been configured securely.
